sustainability
Designer: Ken Miki
Member of: JAGDA, Japan
This poster was designed as an official poster for EXPO 2005 AICHI JAPAN. It was designed with a single line that circulates eternally. As you follow the line that ties the chain of life, the concept of sustainability emerges into the society where coexistence is called for.
Born in 1955 in Kobe, Ken Miki established his own studio in 1982. He has developed all-round design activities that cover across various design disciplines from the perspective of communication. His main works include campaigns for ThinkPad by IBM JAPAN, Ltd. and visual identity for Tokyo World Environment Day. He is a member of JAGDA and AGI. He has published a book titled 'Selected Works 1994-2002 KenMiki' by amusartspress.
As a member of concept developing team for the Icograda Congress to be held in Nagoya in October, Miki is currently working on the Congress Kit. You can view a glimpse of his designs and other Congress tools by various Japanese designers at the Congress website www.visualogue.com

International Student Poster Competition, NAGOYA
Designer: Shunji Niinomi
Member of: JAGDA, Japan
The 2003 Icograda Congress Nagoya, Japan, to be held in October 2003, is hosting an international poster competition for students. The competition, exclusively sponsored by Menicon, a Nagoya-based corporation that introduced contact lenses into Japan, calls for original posters by students under the themes of: (a) Identity and (b) Eye Day. The call-for-entries poster has just been published and distributed to design-related educational institutions across Japan.
The designer, Shunji Niinomi, a JAGDA member from Nagoya, explains his intent as follows: A call-for-entries poster is supposed to encourage entrants to broaden their ideas, so I have refrained from specifics. I have simplified and made this image as easy to understand as possible. This kind of poster should also be intensely inviting. The wide-open eyes I've drawn here declare both the importance of seeing and the excitement of seeing. I call them 'Exhilarated Eyes.'
These are eyes that have seen something new, eyes that have known surprise. They float within the symbol for infinity, representing expanding ripples in a body of water. As for the fact that I've painted only one pupil in my pair of enthused eyes, you may, following the Japanese tradition with blank-eyed 'dharma' figures, fill in the other when you achieve your ultimate goal: To win the student poster competition!
